The European organic market grew to 52,000 million euros in 2020, that is, an increase of 15%, the highest growth rate in the last decade. The organic area also continues to grow according to the latest data collected by the FiBL and IFOAM Organic Agriculture Research Institute and published in the statistical yearbook “The World of Organic Agriculture”.

France becomes the new number one country in terms of area under production and ecological management with more than 2.5 million hectares, surpassing Spain, which currently ranks second with more than 2.4 million hectares. Italy closes the ranking with 2.1 million hectares in the ecological surface. In 2020, some 17 million hectares are cultivated according to organic production in Europe, of which some 15 million correspond to countries of the European Union.

Organic farmland increased in 2020 in the European Union by more than 5%, although significantly lower than the growth of the previous year. The country that declared the newest hectares under organic cultivation was France with some 300,000 hectares. As a curious fact, the country with the highest ecological share of the total arable land is Liechtenstein with 41.6%, followed by Austria with 26%.

In 2020, the organic markets of many European countries recorded double-digit growth, mainly due to the pandemic, as the population is increasingly concerned about health, the environment, climate change, and, of course, food. The inhabitants of the European Union already spend more than €100 on organic food per person per year, this means that it has doubled in the last decade. Some European countries are close to €500 per person per year in organic food consumption.
